SDX Central Introduction
SDX Central is a leading provider of resources and tools for the software-defined infrastructure and networking industry. The company’s offerings extend beyond news and analysis to include in-depth research, expert insights, and innovative solutions crucial for modern IT infrastructure, cloud services, and network optimization.
Challenges & Goals
The SDX Central team tasked us with functional and regression testing for their APIs and web applications:
- Functional Testing Kickoff: At the outset, the project faced challenges due to an initial lack of clear guidelines and strategic direction on initiating the functional testing activities, which created uncertainties regarding the scope, objectives, and specific areas of the application to prioritize for testing.
- Extensive Test Coverage: The primary challenge involved guaranteeing thorough test coverage across all functionalities within the application. This required meticulously identifying and testing all possible user interactions, edge cases, and integration points to ensure that every feature performed correctly under various conditions and usage scenarios.
- Regression Issues: One of the critical challenges was to identify and address any issues introduced by new changes or updates to the application, which could potentially disrupt or degrade the performance of existing functionalities. This involved rigorous testing to detect any regressions, ensuring that recent modifications did not negatively affect the overall stability, reliability, and user experience of the application.
- Resource Utilization: Efficiently utilizing resources to maintain a balance between manual and automated testing.
Solutions
To address the above challenges, we implemented a comprehensive test strategy leveraging the following methodologies:
- Define Functional Requirements: Collected and understood the functional requirements for the applications. Shared a set of functional questionnaires to conclude the requirements.
- Dedicated Test Environment: Established a dedicated test environment for functional and regression tests, ensuring realism. This involved selecting appropriate test systems and networks to conduct tests under realistic conditions as per the requirements.
- Effort Estimation Creation: Based on scenario criticality and test types, we determined the effort required to complete end-to-end functional and regression testing using an in-house estimation template framework.
- Project and Test Plan Creation: Developed a project plan outlining daily activities from the functional testing team and business side, detailing prerequisites needed for functional testing stages. The test plan specified how tests should be conducted, test cases to be examined, and how results would be recorded and evaluated, including entry and exit criteria.
- Conduct the Tests: Once the test environment was set up and the test plan created, we conducted functional and regression tests under controlled conditions to obtain reliable results.
- Evaluate and Document the Results: After completing the tests, we analyzed results from both the server and client sides, collecting graphs showing the system’s functional metrics.
- Optimize and Improve: Based on test results, we identified and optimized functional weaknesses. Some optimizations included:
- Refining test scripts for better accuracy and coverage.
- Implementing continuous integration to streamline the regression testing process.
- Enhancing test data management to improve test consistency and reliability.
